Flying Squirrels Unveil Comic-Themed Nutzy

Full Press Release from The Flying Squirrels: RICHMOND, VA- The Flying Squirrels have unveiled two comic-themed images of Nutzy which will be featured across all of the club’s marketing and branding for the 2011 season.

“Nutzy has been one of the most identifiable members of the Flying Squirrels organization,” said Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “From the moment we introduced him in February, he was an instant hit with adults and kids alike. As we prepare for our second season in Richmond, we want to build Nutzy’s celebrity status and making him the centerpiece of our branding will help accomplish that.”

The first version of the comic-themed Nutzy artwork features the Flying Squirrels’ mascot in a “Power Stance” with his right hand on his hip, his left arm down by his side, and his cape blowing in the wind. The second version shows Nutzy in a “Fight in Flight” pose, flying through the air with his arms outstretched. Both images were created by Richmond-based Eastwood Media.

“We wanted something fun. We wanted to define a narrative. And we also wanted to bring power to the character of Nutzy,” said Eastwood Media Managing Partner Kevin Harrison. “A comic-book theme seemed to provide us with all of those elements.”

Eastwood Media’s Elias Dancey was the Lead Artist on the new artwork for The Flying Squirrels. His vision of a super-hero style illustration became the ideal fit for Nutzy.

“The core essence of Nutzy is to have ‘Funn’,” said Dancey. “We wanted to convey that in a way that both kids and parents can relate to. The result is a series of fantastic poses that captures the look of Nutzy while staying true to his character.”

The comic-themed Nutzy images were also debuted on the club’s website, SquirrelsBaseball.com, featured prominently on the website header in addition to the interior page headers. The Nutzy images will also appear on all of the Flying Squirrels print collateral including the club’s 2011 pocket schedule and poster schedule. A 72-inch standup of the Nutzy “Power Stance” pose will be placed in the Squirrels Nest Team Store and will be available for photo opportunities for Flying Squirrels fans.

  • Love the whole Nutzy super hero theme. I am one of the art contest winners and had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Elias Dancey on opening night. I look forward to seeing all the rest of the comics!!! Also, I hope to one day draw like Mr. Dancey. His work is absolutley incredible!

  • Congrats Alex! Your family was very proud of you! Having just met you, I was impressed myself. I Always enjoy meeting fellow illustrators (never stop loving comics and cartoons)! The art contest winners took the super hero theme and ran with it! One had Nutzy lifting up a school bus, even! I loved how Alex’s work added a Bat-Signal style Squirrel icon in the sky above a cool cityscape, with Nutzy in full ‘power stance’ in the foreground! Excellent work my friend.
